  • Expertise & Background

Dr. Stephen L. Gresham provides individual, couples, and group psychotherapy for adults (18+). He has an interest and expertise in supporting clients addressing anxiety, depression, adjustment to life transitions, and Coming Out. Above all, his aim is to support clients in clarifying their pathway to wellness and approaching Optimal Health. Stephen earned his PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He completed his APA Internship at the Albany Psychology Internship Consortium and Post-Doctoral residency at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial VAMC. Stephen holds Records of Completion in Cognitive Processing Therapy (PTSD), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Depression (ACT-D), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Substance Use Disorders (CBT-SUD). Dr. Gresham is also Board Certified in Counseling Psychology. Dr. Gresham finds it essential to share his commitment to the profession of Counseling Psychology. Stephen specifically chose Counseling Psychology as a discipline given its intentional interweaving of empirically supported practices and cultural humility within service delivery (i.e., clinical practice), and its explicit commitment to Social Justice advocacy to address systemic inequities that give rise to disparities in health. For Dr. Gresham, Social Justice is a strong principle which must be applied within and outside of the clinical encounter. To that end, Stephen partners with local, state, and national level organizations to provide free educational opportunities exploring systemic oppression, minority stress, coping, and allyship.

  • Treatment Approach

I am a Black/African-American, Cis-Gender, Gay-identified, Middle-Class, male Psychologist. I navigate my personal and professional experiences with keen awareness of how my culturally intersecting and sociopolitical identities impact opportunities, interpersonal interactions, wellness, and provide both privileges and disadvantages. It is with these identities and this understanding that I approach the psychotherapy enterprise.

Dr. Gresham begins with the belief that each person is entitled to Optimal Health! Additionally, Dr. Gresham holds as a fundamental belief that each client has within themselves the capacity to thrive. It is with this lens that a collaborative partnership within psychotherapy is cultivated and the journey toward Optimal Health begins.

Our clinical work together is client focused, strengths-based, and informed by research. We will utilize theories such as Cognitive-Behavioral Theory [CBT], Attachment Theory, and Feminist Theory to understand the role formative experiences have on beliefs you may hold about yourself, others with whom you interact, and the world around you. Further, we will work to understand the myriad impact of these beliefs on varied dimensions of life. Within our work together, we explicitly examine the contributing role of culture and environment on health. Therapy should be guided by you. To that end, attention is given to hearing wishes you have about your Optimal Health. In service of clarifying the path towards constructing that vision, we collaborate regarding interventions to strengthen your walk along your journey. As approaching wellness can be difficult, we utilize meditation and mindfulness strategies to help us understand how discomfort can be held while simultaneously engaging in desired action building that image of wellness. The hope is that through the collaborative relationship a willingness to engage self-examination can occur, and that you can experience empowerment to be an active participant in the writing of your story.
